When I was a teenager, I had a few small dreams.
The first: when I have a kid, they'll have a way better life than I ever had.
The second came from our family Christmas party at my aunt and uncle's house. I loved that house. I remember thinking, if I ever have a house someday, this is what I want it to look like. Not when. If.
The third was a car parked on the side of a road. Nothing special, but I loved the color, a nice blue. I told myself, if I ever get a car someday, that's the color I want.
Now I was looking at my daughter, and I thought: she has a way better life than I ever had.
Then I looked around. My wife and I owned a house a lot like my aunt and uncle's.
Then I walked to the picture window and looked at the driveway. My car was that exact blue. I hadn't even planned it.
I was living my childhood dream, and I'd been too busy feeling stuck to notice.
